According to an article in Better Homes & Gardens (may 2012) 86% of digital photos never leave their memory cards! Ouch! If your camera is lost, stolen or the dog erases your cards are you going to lose precious memories?
I recommend that at least once a month you copy all of your digital photos from your camera and your phone to your computer. Feel free to edit (delete) the yucky ones! If you don’t feel it’s worthy of printing or pitting in a album someday it can go in a “non critical” folder. The rest- organize and back up! A cd or DVD doesn’t cut it long term. What will your grand kids think if they find a cd in the attic of your wedding photos and no prints… 10 years from now they will likely be unreadable by most computers. When’s the last time you used a floppy disk?
If its truly a valuable image- print it and keep digital back ups… Prints can be made in expensively and are a true archival method. Make a goal to print at least ten or fifteen images each month.
Organize them so you can find it later. I like folders. I have a “working images” folder for each year. In that year I have Categories (for me it’s client type) perhaps for you it could be by sport or vacation or family gatherings. Each new event gets a folder all to itself in its right category. Many people do well with labeling their folders by type and date. Ie if you go on a camping trip this summer in cadillac Michigan- the folder hierarchy would be like this… 2012 photos –> family vacations –> Cadillac July 2012
This way finding that photo of the kids playing on the beach is much easier!!
Back up in whatever method works best for you but remember no method is fool proof. Several copies of the most important items is always best! Try online methods like shutterfly or back up your whole computer using a backup to the cloud method like crash plan.
How do you keep your images safe?
From 10am Friday through 2pm Monday Nov 28th we will be offering our annual special on gift cards- usable for new sessions only. $100 for $50 or $200 for $100. ($200 limit per household). Call with a credit card # and we will mail your gift cards!
Also on special are our Photography 101 and Photoshop 101 Classes. Regularly $125 each- you may register for both for $125 or the Photography 101 for $55. Photoshop 101 may be purchased ala carte for just $75! Photoshop 101 includes small class sizes (up to 6 people) and includes a cd with special actions that I regularly use. You will leave the class with a better understanding of the tools in photoshop, layers, and actions. You will have completed 3 projects including facial retouching, object removal, and converting from a color image to black/white as well as custom hand selected color… Photoshop 101 is a comprehensive 3 hour class and is suitable for owners of Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Photoshop elements (Elements 10 is on sale this weekend at both Costco and Staples for 50% off!!)
Our Photography 101 class is a 2 hour class which teaches basic camera skills, understanding lighting and creative ways to get the kiddos to cooperate with you! Our students regularly comment how much they have learned and how easy it is to apply what they learn! We recommend either an SLR type camera or a point/shoot that you can put onto Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority. Other point shoots will work as well with the application varying a little bit. Great introduction to Photography class! More dates will be added regularly.
January’s Winter Wonderland Limited Edition Set will be available for just $25 session fee regularly but if you book this weekend the entire $25 will go towards your print order making your session free!! Winter Wonderland is recommended for kids from the age of 6months-12 years ($25 per child)
