Here is a list of some of my FAQ. Simply click on the questions you want answers to! If you have a question that is not answered here, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
How much are your packages? What do your packages include?
All my packages include the high-res digital negatives and your own personal online gallery. You can see my basic wedding price list here. Full Day packages begin at $1600
Do you offer engagement sessions?
Yes! À la carte engagement sessions are $250 for a 2 hour session. Products and files are additional. There is no minimum purchase. If you have booked your wedding photography with me, your session is INCLUDED in your package. No minimum purchase is required. I offer some AMAZING products for your wedding from your engagement photos. Most of my couples choose to purchase some great stuff like a guestbook, party favors, and more! I am happy to show you these when we meet! In your engagement session I am all about getting to know you as a couple and your being comfortable with me and my cameras on your wedding day. So on your big day, you can feel free to celebrate your love with your family and friends.
Do you work with a second photographer?
Sometimes! It just depends on your packages and if you elect to add a 2nd photographer or not. Realistically, a 2nd photographer is best for large weddings or ones with multiple things happening at different locations. I’m happy to go over the day and help you with your timeline and discuss if a 2nd shooter is the best fit or not. I do about half of my weddings without a 2nd shooter.
Should I do a first look?
It’s the 21st century, so it’s not considered bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. What’s more, there are actually some pretty big advantages to a first-look session prior to the wedding. Not only are the bride, groom, bridal party and family in top form, the bride and bridesmaids’ hair and makeup are fresh, and the groom & groomsmen are still OK with being in their tuxes. If you do decide to go with a pre-ceremony formal portrait approach, be sure to set aside 15 minutes of private time for just the two of you. These private moments, before you start taking more formal, posed portraits, are often the most special for the bride and groom. You are able to say a prayer together, or exchange meaningful gifts, relax and think about the moments to come. This quiet, private time also serves as a break to calm your nerves. This healthy pre-ceremony atmosphere creates a smooth, steady flow through the day’s events. Getting this step out of the way early in the day frees up the rest of your time to spend with your guests. All this being said, if you choose not to do a first look- that’s great too! Its your wedding! I want you to make it the way you want it!
What kind of wedding albums do you offer?
I’m so glad you asked about that! I’m not just a shoot & burn photographer, I like to create custom albums for each of my clients. I offer beautiful lay-flat archival albums in several sizes with custom designed covers that can be a variety of materials. Your album is a collaborative design process and becomes something that is uniquely you.
Do you retouch all of our photographs?
We make sure the lighting, color, and cropping is ideal. This is included in all photographs. In your printed products like albums or canvases, I will do full retouching such as makeup retouching, glass glare, and editing pimples. Generally speaking, today’s makeup artists are so talented at hiding any blemishes the only retouching I need to do is glass glare removal, etc. I can also do things like body shaping or other more extensive retouching. This is typically only done on request and usually incurs additional charges.
Where are you located? Do you offer destination weddings?
I’m just outside Grand Rapids, Michigan. in Kentwood. I do destination weddings as well! Typically I charge travel fees in the state of Michigan (up to a 3 hour drive) after 50 miles. If your wedding is over a 3 hour drive, it will require overnight accommodations. I can help you figure out those costs on an individual basis. Weddings out of state or country are available too- just ask!
What kind of camera do you use?
I use professional Nikon equipment and I always have backups!
Do you offer the RAW files?
I only provide finalized images for you to share with family and friends. Paying for a professional photographer allows you to receive professionally edited photography that meets the artistic standards of your photographer.
Do I get the high-resolution digital negatives?
Yes! You will also receive a print and usage release form which allows you to use your wedding images for all personal use. You can print and share them as much as you like.
What does the print & usage release let me do with my photos?
The printing release gives you personal use rights to your photos. This means you can plaster them all over Facebook and Pinterest and Instagram until your heart’s content. You can blog about your special day. You can run down to the local drug store and print up 150 wallet prints of your Uncle Pete dancing like Michael Jackson and send a copy to every one of your guests. What you can’t do with your wedding photos is say that you took them, re-edit them in Instagram filteristic splendor, or post them anywhere that requires that you claim sole ownership of the photos (you know, pretend that you made them). That includes entering them in most contests. However, I do really want you to be excited about your wedding photos, and if you want to share them on your favorite forums and blogs, we will just need to communicate about it first. Most blogs just want to be sure they have original content and not images that are already on 17 other blogs. So if you want to share your pictures somewhere more public, just send me an email and we can discuss how to get it done just right.
How long does it take before we can see our pictures?
One thing that is unique about my studio is you will receive your high-res digital files within 3 weeks from your wedding!
Can you make that black & white picture back to color?
Generally no. It can’t hurt to ask, but I typically edit a certain percentage in color and based on the image choose ones for black and white that look best artistically. If you have a preference for more or less black & white images please let me know before the wedding!
How many pictures do we get?
Great question! I have heard some people tell me they received several thousand images from their wedding and were too overwhelmed to even make decisions. While I do not limit the number of images I take, I am confident in my skills and know when I have the shot, so I don’t need to “spray and pray” that I got the image. Usually you will receive between 50-100 images per hour. It just depends on how much is happening! :)
Do you come to the rehearsal?
I have photographed well over 200 weddings and during that time, I’ve only ever gone to one rehearsal dinner. It doesn’t seem to be helpful for me. If you have a ‘challenging’ venue, feel free to email or text some images of the space and if I feel it’s needed, I will go check out the space ahead of time!
How does the album design process work?
Once you receive your online image gallery, I will ask you to ‘favorite’ the appropriate number of images and email me when you have done so. Then from there, I will design your album. After I’ve done the preliminary design, I will email you a proof and you can go through and make changes as needed. Once we have finalized the design and all retouching is completed, I order your book and it will take approximately 6-8 weeks to come back.
How are our images delivered?
Your high resolution images are delivered via your own personal gallery. You can share them with friends and download them directly. If you have a poor internet connection and this isn’t a viable option for you, let me know and I will send you a thumb-drive of your images instead.
What is your style of photography?
I would say I offer a cross between a modern photojournalistic style and a more traditional blend of romantic, creative, & stylish posing.
Do you take posed family photos?
Absolutely. I feel that your family is an integral part of your lives and important in your wedding day!
Can we provide you with a "shot list”?
While it is generally meant to be a helpful thing, I don’t recommend it. I can provide you a check off list of the groupings I photograph at every wedding. If you have ‘unusual’ groupings or people you want photos with- please do give us that information!
Do you have insurance?
How long have you been in business? How many weddings have you photographed?
I have been photographing weddings since 1999! My first year photographing weddings was in college where I worked for a Wedding Photography company that hired dozens of photographers and sent them all over the state. While I wouldn’t suggest you hire that type of company today (how impersonal!) I did learn a ton that summer - I photographed over 50 weddings that summer alone!! To date I am not certain the exact number of weddings but it is over 300! I opened Details ETC Photography in 2002.
Can you hold my date for me?
I will only hold a date when a retainer is paid. If you are serious about booking, please fill out a contract and make your retainer payment! Dates book fast!
What is your payment schedule?
A $600 retainer is required to book your wedding. The balance is due 30 days prior to your wedding. I also offer monthly payment plans if that is preferable to you.
Can we pay you some of the balance after the wedding?
No. All monies are due 30 days prior to your event. Late fees will be assessed and/or work will not be performed if payment is not made in full. The exception to this is products that you may purchase after the wedding.
If I need to cancel my wedding, is the retainer refundable?
No. A retainer is paid so I will reserve your wedding date and not allow others to book me.
What if you get sick?
I have never ever missed a wedding. I never plan to! That being said, if something came up and I was not able to make it to your wedding, I have an amazing network of photographers that will step up and take care of you. If something crazy happens, (like I got struck by lightning on the way there!!) I would offer a full refund!!
When should we book you for our wedding?
As soon as possible. If you want me to photograph your wedding, the first person who makes a payment for a date locks me in.
If we're running late, will you stay later than you were scheduled?
Of course, I allow overtime if necessary and charge $125/ hour. I always speak with my bride and groom and make sure that all is well before I leave.
Do you offer discounts for off-season or non-Saturday events?
Sometimes. I do not offer discounts for Friday-Sunday weddings in May-October. Other days of the week or months I might depending on what is required. Often packages can be restructured for small intimate gatherings! Just ask!
Do we need to feed you at the reception?
Yes! I (or we!) work extremely hard on your wedding day and need a break and food so we can keep our strength and energy! You don’t want hangry photographers! I often suggest you place me strategically in your reception room so I have a nice view of the guests and you! I do eat with my cameras in my lap just in case!!
Can our family and friends take pictures with their cameras?
Yes, however I will ask them to step out of the way or leave if they are disruptive and causing delays during posed images. I make sure your professional photos look great! Since you will receive the digital files, you are welcome to share these with them as well. I do not allow other photographers when we do the ‘couple’ shots of the bride and groom in unique locations. This is so the bride & groom get the best images possible of these intimate moments together.
We want to go to a neat place for pictures between the wedding & ceremony— do you have recommendations?
Yes! There are lots of fun places for photos. Some require permits and extra costs. Let me know what you are thinking and I will help you out!
I love you and want to book you, what do I do?
